TOPTICA Photonics AG

Role in the consortium

TOPTICA’s main tasks within the scope of the project consist of research into concepts for modularization, scaling and compactification of single-frequency laser sources for strontium-based quantum computers. The focus lies on significantly increasing their robustness and uptime with minimum user intervention.

Therefore, this subproject addresses one of the key limitations for continuous operation of an atomic quantum processor and enables further developments beyond the current state of research. For processors with a larger number of qubits as well as for successive improvement of the gate quality, the required laser systems must become modular, scalable and more reliable for 24/7 operation.

Team

TOPTICA develops and manufactures high-end laser systems for scientific and industrial applications. The portfolio includes diode lasers, ultrafast fiber lasers, terahertz systems and frequency combs. OEM customers, scientists, and over a dozen Nobel laureates all acknowledge the world-class exceptional specifications of TOPTICA’s lasers, as well as their reliability and longevity.

Founded in 1998 near Munich (Germany), TOPTICA became one of the leading laser photonics companies by aiming for, and consistently delivering, high-end specifications. TOPTICA’s diode lasers are appreciated for excellent coherence, wide tuning range and ideal beam profiles.

TOPTICA's more than 450 employees take pride in developing customized systems. In close collaboration with several universities and institutes, latest scientific discoveries are frequently turned into commercial products. With a global distribution network, TOPTICA provides exceptional service worldwide.

Dr. Jürgen Stuhler

Vice President Quantum Technologies

After more than 10 years in academic research on atom & quantum optics (physics Phd in Constance/Germany, postdoc in Florence/Italy, atom optics group leader in Stuttgart/Germany), Juergen joined TOPTICA in 2006 to manage scientific laser sales & products. He coordinated quantum technology (QT) research projects & consortia, organized QT schools & conferences, and participated in QT panels & boards. As Vice President and head of the business unit Quantum Technologies, he is strategically responsible for TOPTICA’s QT roadmap and its realization.

Dr. Axel Friedenauer

Project Manager Quantum Technologies

Axel Friedenauer obtained his PhD at the MPQ for experimental work on quantum simulations based on trapped ions. During more than 14 years of R&D at TOPTICA, he has gained technical expertise in cw high power lasers and amplifiers, high power frequency conversion as well as ultrafast fiber lasers.

Dr. Stephan Ritter

Director Application Quantum Technologies

Stephan Ritter worked in academia for 15 years, covering topics like laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation and atom lasers, cavity QED, quantum information processing and in particular quantum networks. In 2017 Stephan moved to industry. At TOPTICA, he established the quantum solutions team, which he is currently leading and expanding. The goal of his team is to provide custom lasers and photonics solutions for the most demanding applications in quantum technologies, ranging from quantum metrology and quantum networks to quantum computing and simulation.
